Akron

Akron is a small village located in Tuscola County in Michigan’s Thumb region, known for its agricultural heritage, railroad history and close-knit rural community. Home to just under 350 residents, Akron sits along the border of Akron and Fairgrove townships and continues to reflect the quiet charm of small-town Michigan. Founded in 1854 by Charles H. Beach, the community was originally known as Beach’s Corners before being renamed Akron following the establishment of a post office in 1857. The village grew through farming and trade, supported by fertile farmland and key transportation routes including the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad and M-138, which helped connect local farmers and businesses to larger regional markets.

Agriculture remains central to Akron’s identity today, with surrounding farms producing crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat and sugar beets across the rich Thumb farmland. The village’s railroad heritage and longtime connection to farming continue to shape its rural character and community traditions.

Despite its small size, Akron maintains a strong sense of community pride, with residents supporting local churches, schools, businesses and community events throughout the region. Today, Akron continues to embody the enduring values of rural Michigan — hard work, neighborly spirit and a deep connection to the land and local history.
