Cass City is a vibrant village located in Tuscola County in Michigan’s Thumb region, known for its strong agricultural roots, historic downtown and close-knit community spirit. Home to roughly 2,500 residents, Cass City has long served as an important business and service center for the surrounding rural communities.
Named after General Lewis Cass, an influential Michigan territorial governor and statesman, Cass City was founded in the mid-1800s and officially incorporated in 1883. The arrival of the railroad played a major role in the village’s early growth, helping local farmers and businesses transport goods throughout Michigan and fueling commercial development in the area.
Agriculture remains central to Cass City’s identity today. Fertile farmland surrounding the village supports crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat and sugar beets, while generations of farming families have helped shape the community’s hardworking traditions and rural values.
Cass City is also known for its strong sense of community pride and active civic involvement. Annual events such as the Fourth of July Freedom Festival and Christmas in the Village bring residents and visitors together each year to celebrate local traditions and small-town life.
Education continues to be an important part of the community through Cass City Public Schools, which serves students from preschool through high school and is recognized for academics, athletics and extracurricular opportunities.
Today, Cass City continues to reflect the enduring values of Michigan’s Thumb region — community involvement, agricultural heritage and neighborly hospitality — while preserving the history and traditions that have defined the village for generations.
