Kingston

Kingston is a small village located in Tuscola County in Michigan’s Thumb region, offering a peaceful rural lifestyle and a strong sense of community. Home to roughly 400 residents, the village is surrounded by scenic farmland and reflects the traditional charm of small-town Michigan.

The community was first settled in 1857 by Alanson K. King. Originally named Newbury, the village was later renamed Kingston in honor of its first settler. Kingston developed steadily during the late 1800s as farming became the foundation of the local economy and community identity.

Agriculture continues to play a major role in Kingston today, with the surrounding farmland producing crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat and sugar beets. Generations of farming families have helped shape the village’s hardworking and close-knit character.

The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century helped Kingston grow into a local business center, supporting merchants, grain elevators and agricultural trade throughout the area. Over the years, the village became known as a friendly rural community where neighbors worked together and supported local schools, churches and businesses.

Despite its small size, Kingston maintains an active community spirit through holiday celebrations, parades, school activities and local fundraisers. Residents continue to value the slower pace of life and strong community connections that have defined Kingston for generations.

Today, Kingston remains a proud agricultural community that preserves its rural heritage while offering the warmth and welcoming atmosphere that have long been hallmarks of life in Michigan’s Thumb.
